5:00 pm: Chichester Progressives Meet-up

December 10, 2021

Chichester Progressives is an independent group who aim to create an inclusive environment that celebrates diverse thinking and topical discussion.
This week’s Topic of Conversation: With the new Nationality and Borders Bill coming into parliament, and the recent tragic deaths of 30 people in the Channel, the UK is intensifying it’s hostile environment towards refugees and asylum seekers.
Do we think there is a ‘refugee crisis’?
What can we do as a country?
And how far should we go to help?
Why are the government so committed to marginalising refugees even more?.

1:30 pm: Webinar on Citizens’ Assemblies & Juries, Online & Offline: Tips, challenges and best practices for public & local authorities

December 15, 2021

Panel Members: Kaela Scott (Involve), Emily Reed (Devon Climate Emergency Partnership), Patrick Devine-Wright, Alice Moseley, Rebecca Sandover & Fionnguala Sherry-Brennan (University of Exeter)

Involve's Director of Innovation & Practice, Kaela Scott, is taking part in a webinar to share research findings and lessons from Devon’s Online Climate Assembly. It will explore some of the following questions:

  • How do online deliberation experiences compare to ‘offline’ citizen deliberation? What practical tips are there for getting the best from an online deliberation environment? What are the benefits & drawbacks of each?
  • Deciding on size and form: what type and how many people to involve?
  • How can citizens’ juries and assemblies be embedded into local democratic processes?
  • Determining the scope of your assembly: how narrow or broad?
  • What timing issues are there to consider in conducting your citizens’ assembly or jury?
  • How do you best evaluate your citizens’ assembly?

The webinar is aimed at local authorities or other public bodies who are making use of, or considering using, online or offline public engagement to inform public policy or explore public perspectives.

A toolkit of lessons & tips for best practice will be finalised and shared following the webinar.
