Join Surfers Against Sewage, SAS, in their campaign to cut plastic pollution with a cup charge

Around five billion single-use coffee cups are used each year in the UK alone. Only a tiny percent are recycled, leaving the rest to pollute our beaches and rivers – where they can be deadly to sea life – or are dumped in landfill or burned.

SAS are petitioning the government to add a 25p charge to single-use cups to encourage consumers to switch to reusable alternatives. Last year the Houses of Parliament introduced a 25p charge on single-use paper cups for hot drinks sold there. This resulted in a massive 74% drop in the use of paper cups, with no negative impact on overall sales. So far the government has refused to introduce the charge nationwide.
