‘DELUGE’
A new play by Jacquie Penrose
In September, the Bench Theatre Company will perform award-winning playwright Jacquie Penrose’s most recent play, DELUGE.
The play is set against a Met Office Red Alert for extreme rain and flooding. Five mismatched people are sheltering upstairs as they have been advised to do, but they cannot agree about how serious this is. It’s just rain, isn’t it? Or is it more evidence that the climate crisis is real?
This is Zee and Tony’s house – his sister Caz has arrived unexpectedly. And Irene and Josh seek shelter when their bungalow is flooded. They all camp out in the small upstairs study - to some this feels like ridiculous overkill – to others an essential precaution. And how to look to the future and make rational decisions – when immediate personal issues seem more important?
This highly topical new play asks questions about how ordinary people respond to the climate crisis, with, despite the seriousness of the situation, occasional comical results. We’re British after all, we really don’t like to make a fuss.
Wednesday 14 – Saturday 17 September at 7.30, with an additional 2.30 matinee on the Saturday.
For tickets, please contact The Spring box office online Bench: Deluge — The Spring or in person. On the first night there is a Buy One and Get One Half Price offer.
